There is a difference between Diabetes Australia membership and registering with the NDSS.
Diabetes Australia is a not-for-profit, member-based organisation in each state and territory that relies on its membership base and the community to support its vital work of supporting people with diabetes through diabetes awareness, education and research.
Membership to Diabetes Australia provides access to many valued services and benefits and is available only to people who pay an annual subscription fee to be a member of the Diabetes Australia organisation in their state or territory.

Membership benefits include:
- preferred access and discounts for diabetes products and services
- sales and advice on blood glucose meters
- quarterly national and local magazines
- covering diabetes management, research and lifestyle issues
- information and advice about healthy eating and physical activity
- members-only web pages*
- local community support groups*
- some discounts from other suppliers*

Carry the NDSS card with you at all times as it is officially recognised by the Australian Government. In addition, you will need to carry the card if you take supplies on domestic flights and international flights departing from Australia.

The NDSS registration card is accepted as primary proof that a person with insulin treated diabetes needs to carry with them their diabetes equipment on flights, such as:
- insulin pen
- pump
- syringes
- needles
- glucagon kit.
Supplementary photographic proof of identity, such as a driver’s license, and a letter from your doctor may also be requested.
If you are travelling internationally check with the consulate of the country you are travelling to for any specific security requirements prior to departure.

NDSS products can be obtained in person, or they can ordered by mail, by phone, fax or on the internet (selected states only) and the supplies delivered to your home.
When placing an order you will be asked to give your NDSS registration number (on your NDSS card) and your Medicare card number (or if eligible your DVA card number, Pension card, Safety Net card, etc).
